1. Is there any pesticide or other residue in your fruit and vegetables?
Although healthy fruit and vegetables are very important to us, the ‘organic’ criterion is not our only premise. However, we do act in accordance with the legislative directive of every country we offer our products in. Which means: all SanLucar fruit and vegetables sold in Germany satisfy the strict criteria of the German legislation.
As we don’t only want to settle for this, we have developed our own, even stricter quality guidelines. We very rarely have to use pesticides, as we plant varieties which only flourish to their optimum in the climate of the producing country. In addition, we choose the best farmland. We therefore ensure that the plants grow stronger and are capable to withstand adverse weather conditions and possible pests.
If our plants are affected by pest and disease we always try to fight it with biological means first, like the use of the natural enemy to the pest. Sometimes we even allow the pest or disease to destroy part of the crop, just to keep nature’s cycle intact.
In cases where we have no choice but to use a pesticide, we only use agents permitted by legislation. In doing so, we strictly stick to the application recommendations, so that the agent degrades in the right time of the crop, for instance through evaporation. Only after a final check and clearance by an independent state-run lab, the fruit is harvested and shipped. Always safety first.
2. What makes the difference between SanLucar and organic products?
The term ‘organic’ doesn’t automatically reveal much about the quality and flavour. We at SanLucar want our premium fruit and vegetables to be healthy and very tasty. Therefore we only harvest our products at optimum ripeness and, consequently, at an ideal acid-fructose proportion. It sounds easy, but it isn’t, because it takes numerous rounds of harvesting by trained pickers to pick out the best ripe fruit.
Not forgetting the logistics, which are so important for the ‘fresh from the field’ taste. It is our defined concept of freshness-logistics that provides a fast delivery of our fruit and vegetables to the supermarket. Our famous grapes from Italy, for example, picked in the early mornings, packed right on the field, often arrive at your local store the very next day. This makes them really fresh, which is so important for a good taste.
3. Why are there sometimes exceptions to the quality of your products?
Despite all care taken – nobody is perfect. Same with us. And that’s why even under our strict guidelines it is possible a not-so-fresh-anymore fruit isn’t found and sorted out, although that’s one of our principles. In case you find such fruit or purchase it, please contact your dealer immediately and he will surely not hesitate to exchange it for some fresh fruit.
4. What about the origins of the SanLucar products?
Our products come from 30 countries all over the world. If you want to know the exact origin of your fruits, just check the box in your supermarket; it’s printed there. And if you want to have even more precise information, simply send us the lot number, so we can even tell you the exact parcel of land.
5. Why are SanLucar products more expensive than others, sometimes?
It’s plain simple: good things do not go cheap. Especially fresh and healthy fruit and vegetables. It takes a higher quantity of harvesters and pickers, more rounds of harvesting and extended care for your plants; there’s more in controlling, in manual work and better growing areas, soil types and better selection at the packhouse, just to name a few reasons.
From time to time we even cut the harvest to improve quality. And then there is the packing department’s everyday hygiene and great logistics with its uninterrupted cool chain. All this of course adds to the costs, but with certain things we accept higher cost over any kind of promise. Because in the end – isn’t delicious fruit and vegetables in such unique quality priceless anyway?
