Fruits and vegetables for hot summer days

The sun is smiling down from the sky and the thermometer says it’s almost 30 degrees in the morning – finally the summer is at its most beautiful. You taken your clothes and sandals out of the closet and maybe even packed the swimming bag. So that you can enjoy the sun hours to their fullest, we have a few tips for you on how you can get through the heat culinarily and coolly.

Drink a lot of liquids! The best at hot temperatures are mineral water, unsweetened herbal or fruit teas and juice spritzers in the proportion 3 parts water, a part juice. Alcohol-free wheat beer has also proved to be a tasty thirst quencher. Adults should drink at least 1.5 to 2 litres during the day, children 0.8 to 1.5 litres. At extreme temperatures, the amount must of course be increased.

When it’s hot, we are less hungry and our bodies are less powerful. Therefore, a light diet is is much better than something like pork knuckle with chips, whose digestion would be a great strain the body. For refreshment, fruit and vegetables with a high water content, e.g. cucumbers, tomatoes, watermelons, apples and cherries are best. Cold salads, cold soups or homemade popsicles made of high quality fruit juices, smoothies or fruit purees cool you from the inside. If you sweat a lot, you can also salt your food so that the mineral loss is balanced again.
