Apples

Picked in paradise

In the Ökotest 8/2016, our Apple Gala from Germany was selected and awarded »Very Good«. But our many other varieties are so natural, fruity-sweet and delicious that everybody can find their favourite apple. Master Growers, with many years of family tradition, such as Ulrich Goessl from Styria, passionately dedicate themselves to their apple trees. Even Kaiser Franz had insisted on eating only the apples from the Goessls.

Goessl grew up among the trees and knows every last one of them. For him, they have always been paradise, he says. That’s why his apples taste so seductively delicious, we say.

Sweet tip:

Our extra-crunchy sun-yellow apple Opal® tastes as sweet and intense as when you were a little kid. And it is grown exclusively by SanLucar.

Storage:

It is best to store apples in a cool dark place or in a closed container in the refrigerator, so that they stay crisp and fresh for many weeks. At room temperature, they start to shrivel quite quickly. Sliced apples can be protected quite easily with a few splashes of lemon juice before they go brown.

Tips and special features:

Green, yellow, with red cheeks – the apple is as versatile as its origins. Sweet and crisp, sour and aromatic, it enriches every kitchen and is one of the most popular fresh fruits. In Greece, by the way, it is regarded as a symbol of fertility, while the old Germanic tribes saw it as a symbol of immortality.

History

Initially, the apple originates from western and central Asia, where it was already cultivated in 10,000 BC. In ancient times, it arrived in southern and eastern Europe through various trade routes and enjoyed increasing popularity. The very early varieties still tasted sour and woody, only through proper cultivation did it finally get its delicious sweetness.
