Are you socially committed? If so, what do you do?

Interacting fairly and also sociably with people is very important to us. SanLucar agricultural engineers regularly visit our growing partners to be sure on-site that our strict guidelines are also being observed in all working areas. With our DREAMS programme, we are also involved in education, nutrition, sport and environmental protection in our growing countries.

Some 200 people live and work on our farm Rooihoogte. Here we have created a permaculture garden for them for self-sufficiency, in addition, everyone has access to a fitness room and there is an anti-alcohol-abuse programme. With the generous donation of the development association, we bought a bus for the farm inhabitants so that they can easily drive to the next town to run errands and so on. Education for the children is also particularly important to us. The little ones attend our free kindergarten, and for the older kids, we offer private lessons and school scholarships – because education is the key to an independent life. In Tunisia, we open doors for people with mental or physical disabilities. We support and cooperate with organizations such as GAMD (General Association of Motor Disabled) or TUAMIT (Tunisian Union of Aid to Mental Impairment Tunis). These integrate people with disabilities into the world of work.

We also participate in the state programme »Companies as Partners for Schools«. This means we renovate schools, repair schoolyards and finance learning materials. By providing a better learning environment for students and teachers, we are investing in the future of the country. And in cooperation with Tunisian universities, we give students the opportunity to complete their master‘s degree in our tomato oasis in the south of the country and on the berry plantation in the north.

For this commitment, we won the »Hannon Award for the Promotion of Co-Development through Responsible Investment« out of a total of 20 companies in Bercy-Paris in October 2019. In Ecuador, we founded a sports school in cooperation with the Club Atlético and the city hall of Puebloviejo 2016. Here 400 children can play football and basketball all year round under the guidance of trained coaches. And along the way, they experience team spirit, a healthy lifestyle and good nutrition in a playful way.

Since 2012 we have offered SanLucar employees the opportunity to visit our farms in South Africa, Ecuador and Tunisia for one month and to work on the DREAMS projects. Since 2016, our partners have also been participating in the programme. But we are also active in Europe with our DREAMS projects. In Germany, for example, we have been giving fresh fruit to over 1,000 Etllingen schoolchildren every year since 2012. In this way, they experience how good fresh fruit tastes and how good it is for their bodies. In Austria, for example, we support the association Pferde Stärken / Kinder Stärken. There children with disabilities are given the opportunity to develop through contact with horses. And in Spain, since 2013, we have been serving hot meals every day to low-income individuals and families in our El Puchero soup kitchen.
