Fruit Leather: The healthy way to snack.

Fruit Leather: The healthy way to snack.

If you are looking for healthy alternatives to Gummy Bears and the like, listen up! The latest trend in the food industry is colourful, wonderfully sweet, really tasty and without any food colouring, additives or preservatives. And the best thing about it is that you can make it yourself at home! Introducing: Fruit Leather! Why this sweet candy is called this is quite simple. Fruit Leather is nothing more than baked fruit puree. And because the surface and its pliable character are reminiscent of leather, it has been given this name.

What kind of fruit you use to make the delicious candy is up to you. Depending on the fruit, however, you should pay close attention to a few things: The more fructose the fruit has, the less you have to help with sweeteners – mainly because when drying, the sweet fruit flavour is reinforced. Also, you should make your fruit leather from fruit varieties with higher water content dry longer, so that the consistency is firm enough in the end. And if you are looking for fruits with light-coloured fruit flesh for nibbling, you can use a very simple trick to ensure that the colour is not lost: Simply puree in a bit of lemon juice, then the leather will end up being bright yellow or orange!

We especially like berries. With this recipe we can easily transform them into fruit leather: Puree 450g berries with 2 tablespoons of honey. Now spread the mass in a thin layer on the preheated baking tray and place everything in the oven at 50° C for approx. 4 hours. Then the mass can be easily cut with a knife into strips – and it’s ready! And if you’re not going to eat it right away, no problem – because you can keep it in storage tins for weeks. Have fun making and trying this unique snack!
